EXECUTIVE BOARD (SPRING 2008)

HISTORY

board
Penn's ACM SIGGRAPH chapter is a production-oriented group which gives its members experiences in creating animated shorts and design games. We hope to give our members a practical environment to apply the skills they learn in the classroom and offer tutorials in what's not taught. Our group is heavily affiliated with other graphics programs at Penn, including Digital Media Design, Computer Graphics & Gaming Technology, and the Center for Human Modeling & Simulation.

The animation group spun-out of UTV13's animation department where the short Dink was started. Dink was screened at the ACM SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater and was a finalist in MTVu's Best Animation on Campus. Dink told the story of a cockroach's first day at college, and parodied many of the stereotypes of college life. Our group is currently rendering our latest short, Dusty, which is about a dustball trying to save its family from an uber vacuum cleaner.

The game department grew out of the desire of students to extend the techniques that they learned in the Virtual World Design class into a more ambitious project. They began production of a game using the Gamebryo engine, but scrapped that idea in favor of developing their own game
engine for scratch. They hope to have the engine with a demo level created soon.

SPONSORS

Our chapter's success is due in large part to the generous contributions of sponsors to our group and to Computer Graphics @ Penn. If you are interested in sponsoring our chapter, please contact us (pennsiggraph AT gmail DOT com). Advantages of sponsorships include promotion of your company and products to our members, a description of your donation on our site, and production credit. We are currently looking for hardware donations (ie. graphics workstations, rendering workstations, storage, etc.) and software license donations (ie. Maya, Photoshop, etc.)

Apple Computers

Apple has loaned the ACM SIGGRAPH chapter a G5 workstation for rendering and completion of our short Dusty.

Electronic Arts

EA has provided the HMS lab with several workstations which our chapter has made use of.

Pixar Animation Studios

Pixar generously provides HMS with free RenderMan licenses.

Syflex

Syflex provided the animation group with a license for their cloth simulator to use on Dusty.

UPenn HMS

The Center for Human Modeling and Simulation generously lends their lab and resources on the weekends to the animation department for rendering and work hours.

UPenn CETS

Penn Engineering's Computing service keeps the software and licenses up to date and has extended our resources by allowing Renderman and Maya to be installed in their labs.

Walt Disney Animation Studios

Walt Disney Animation Studios has donated portions of its RenderFarm to CG@Penn
